Process Governance Meta Model and Framework

Aug 2019 | Journal of Internet Computing and Services(JICS)

As a sub-concept of corporate or organization governance, business governance and IT governance have become major research topics in academia. However, despite the importance of process as a construct for mediating the domain between business and information technology, research on process governance is relatively inadequate. Process Governance focuses on activities that link business strategy with IT system implementation and explains the creation of corporate core values. The researcher studied the basic conceptual governance models of political science, sociology, public administration, and classified governance styles into six categories. The researcher focused on the series of metamodels. For examples, the traditional Strategy Alignment Model(SAM) by Henderson and Venkatraman which is replaced by the neo-SAM model, organizational governance network model, sequential organization governance model, organization governance meta model, process governance CUBE model, COSO and process governance CUBE comparison model, and finally Process Governance Framework and etc. The Major difference between SAM and neo-SAM model is Process Governance domain inserted between Business Governance and IT Governance. Among several metamodels,PG framework, the core conceptual model consists of four activity dimensions: strategic aligning, human empowering, competency enhancing, and autonomous organizing. The researcher designed five variables for each activity dimensions, totally twenty variables. Besides four activity dimensions, there are six driving forces for Process Governance cycle: De-normalizing power, micro-power, vitalizing power, self-organizing power, normalizing power and sense-making. With four activity dimensions and six driving powers, an organization can maintain the flexibility of process governance cycle to cope with internal and external environmental changes. This study aims to propose the Process Governance competency model and Process Governance variables.

Y Block Diagram as a New Process Notation in a GPS Manufacturer

Feb 2019 | Journal of Internet Computing and Services(JICS)

Company A should maintain myriad conversion tools for the purpose of making a geometric compilation of navigation maps. Company A is already using complex compilation tools, which are tailored to geographical areas and various GPS models. However, due to frequent requirement and personnel changes, there is an endless challenge for perfect tool configuration and multiple map consolidation. To solve this problem, Company A launched a process automation project using Graphviz, which is an open source workflow graph visualization software. Before implementation, they had to document their current map compilation processes and then match it with the applicable conversion tool. For effective representation of process controls, a new graphical process notation is designed, i.e. Y Block diagram. The authors will compare Y Block diagram with other process notations and explain why Y Block diagram is more useful for tool based business processes such as digital map generation processes.

Project Performance Evaluation and Workload Monitoring Technique by Using Input/Output Bipolar Diagram

Oct 2017 | Journal of Internet Computing and Services(JICS)

Company A, an embedded system manufacturer, provides its products to Company P which is the parent company of Company A. Both companies learned that they needed to find over 4,000 bugs before market release in order to meet the acceptable quality level. Traditionally, they had utilized time-series line graphs as their common performance measurement tool. These graphs compared accumulated numbers of bugs fixed with accumulated numbers of bugs found. Engineers in Company A had been under pressure to improve the process capacity because the line for bugs fixed was always below than the line for bugs found. By using a newly designed Bipolar diagram, engineers in Company A analyzed the process performance. And they were in a position to be more flexible for internal or inter-companies meeting. Authors explain an empirical study of a graphical and practical performance measurement tools relating to mainly the Bipolar diagram. As a result, the Bipolar diagram provides workload monitoring and performance measurement functions in a given timeframe by using the concepts of Optimum Process Line (or band) and Fair Process Capacity Zone.

Structural Dashboard Design for Monitoring Job Performance of Internet Web Security Diagnosis Team: An Empirical Study of an IT Security Service Provider

Aug 2017 | Journal of Internet Computing and Services(JICS)

Company A`s core competency is IT internet security services. The Web diagnosis team analyzes the vulnerability of customer`s internet web servers and provides remedy reports. Traditionally, Company A management has utilized a simple table format report for resource planning. But these reports do not notify the timing of human resource commitment. So, upper management asked its team leader to organize a task team and design a visual dashboard for decision making with the help of outside professional. The Task team selected the web security diagnosis practice process as a pilot and designed a dashboard for performance evaluation. A structural design process was implemented during the heuristic working process. Some KPI (key performance indicators) for checking the productivity of internet web security vulnerability reporting are recommended with the calculation logics. This paper will contribute for security service management to plan and address KPI design policy, target process selection, and KPI calculation logics with actual sample data.

A Practical 1 Page Contextual Diagram for Monitoring Multiple Projects: An Empirical Study of an IT Organization

Oct 2016 | Journal of Internet Computing and Services(JICS)

Company A, an embedded system manufacturer, has been managing multiple development projects. Executives need to understand the risk level of every project and prioritize resource distribution. Traditional project monitoring tools or excel sheets are too complex for calculating the risk factors across a functional organization. Two new charts, “Spear-head Chart” and “Float Chart” were designed to assist high level decision making processes. Two charts were used for weekly executive meetings in order to monitor project progress and rectify project direction. One page graphical monitoring tools in Company A are good enough for high management decision making. Authors explain the characteristics of two charts and propose its practical implementation in real working environment. Spear-head chart was also implemented as a system.
